It’s about this time of year that I start living in groutfits (aka ‘grey + outfit’). I’m not sure exactly why, but I tend to wear far more grey in autumn and winter. There’s something about these neutral tones that are cozy and calming for the colder season. It’s an opportunity to add depth to your outfit through subtle shifts in tones and interesting fabrics and textures. For Black Friday, I’m steering clear of black tones and focusing on its close relative and my hero, grey.
Even if you aren’t accustomed to wearing groutfits, there’s a solid chance you’ve worn one unknowingly. You’ve most likely thrown on an old pair of grey sweatpants with a light grey sweatshirt and sat yourself in front of the TV for the evening. Well, even if that’s not the most refined (and intentional) look, it’s certainly an all grey uniform! It may be a bit dull when you’re slouching around the house—but when given the appropriate thought and deliberate selections, you can look confident and fashion-forward!
Today’s look comes entirely from MANGO’s current season—using small shifts in grey shades to create a sophisticated monochromatic palette. I always like to contrast darker and lighter tones between the top and bottom. In this case the coat matches the trousers but the lighter tones of the sweater, shirt, sneakers, and beanie help guide the eye around the outfit so you don’t look like one grey blob. This outfit still works without the coat and accessories which is an important consideration for when you’re indoors and don’t have to layer so heavily.
